Pre-A.P. English III Summer Assignment

Cheryl Bissmeyer

2011-2012

Congratulations on your decision to take English III Pre-A.P.!!! This course covers a broad spectrum of skills usually associated with reading analysis and writing expected in a college freshman composition course. The content of English III Pre-A.P. follows the course as prescribed by the College Board as well as the PSAT and SAT and ACT tests. Everything we do is designed to prepare you for those tests. I can feel confident in basing the course on those tests because they stress the very things we in Canton City Schools feel are essential - critical thinking skills, critical reading skills and analytical, stylistic writing skills, all based on a strong vocabulary.

In an effort to save trees and introduce you to a 21st century learning tool, I chose to create a wiki as the vehicle to disseminate the information for your summer assignment and to introduce you to the type of technology we will be using throughout the school year. With the incorporation of wikispaces, in addition to the face-to-face element, I hope that this course is elevated to an even higher level of learning for each of us. If you should need, you can print this page by clicking the down arrow on the page tab and selecting the print option.

In order to access the wiki and all its content, you need to sign in to your wikispaces account by clicking on the sign in button at the top of this page. Once you do that, you are ready to get started completing your summer reading assignment. I suggest bookmarking this site for easy access.

Some general information concerning this wikispace and how to use it:

  • Check the site frequently.
  • The site functions like any other website except that it is a collaborative space as well. You have the ability to edit the pages in much the same way you would a word document.
  • The navigation to the left will help you to get through the site.
  • It is expected that you will use appropriate conduct while posting and editing pages.
  • To add comments to a particular page select the discussion tab.
  • There are links to various resources of information embedded in the text. These resources are underlined and will take you to a PDF, a website or a page within the wikispace itself.
  • The Contact Me page is a place where you can post questions concerning the summer work. Feel free to answer a classmate's post if you know the answer! That is what a wiki is all about--collaboration.

And now on to the nitty-gritty...

The following is a breakdown of the 3 tasks you are required to complete over the course of the summer:

#1 Introduce Yourself: The first thing you need to do is introduce yourselves to each other in our new online community. I know, I know!...you all already know each other, but it is important that we do this to start building our online community. Besides, you never know what new or interesting tidbit you will learn about your classmates through this activity! (10 points)

#2 Required Reading Assignment: Your first task is to read as well as thoroughly and thoughtfully annotate the novel, The Grapes of Wrath (30 points). Second, you must complete a dialectical journal over the novel (30 points). The dialectical journal should be typed.

#3 Required Writing Assignment: For this part of the assignment, you will write a personal narrative of five chapters. This narrative should be typed and double spaced. (30 points)

This will be a very fulfilling summer assignment for you. Please keep up with the work as summer will move quickly and we will be back in school before you know it.

Remember the more effort you put into your work, the more we will all get out of the class.
