Required Writing Assignment

In addition to the required reading for this class, you are also required to write a Personal Narrative. These personal narratives will give me a good indication of the writing strengths and weaknesses of the class. It is through a careful analysis of your writing that I will base the writing instruction for the first couple of months of class.

In order to fulfill the requirements of the assignment you will compose a personal narrative of five chapters/pages. Each of the five topics below will be a chapter in your personal narrative. All chapters/pages should be between 500-600 words, typed and double-spaced. Also, please make sure to title each chapter of your narrative. (Sample titles are provided or you may provide original titles if you choose).

This assignment is worth 30 points and will be due the the second week of class. Take care to peruse the Personal Narrative rubric that I will use to assess your writings so that you are aware of the requirements for this assignment.

Remember, you can print this page by clicking the down arrow on the page tab and selecting the print option.

Chapter 1: “Call Me Ishmael”

One’s name is mysterious; it has a beginning, a source, a kinship, a reality of its own. Many of us have no choice about our names, yet sometimes they invoke complex family histories, unfamiliar allusions, Biblical roots, or other references. No matter what, names are part of our identities and help us with knowing who we are. In this chapter, reflect upon your name and your name’s relationship to you. Please do not provide me with a narrative based on a definition found from a website.

Chapter 2: “The Wonder Years”

Memories, wonderful and heartbreaking, form the basis for the construction of meaning in our lives. Start from the recollections of your earliest memory and write about selected memories of your childhood. These may be serious or humorous. Comment about how they particularly affected your life.

Chapter 3: “Beauty: Where the Other Dancer is the Self”

This is the title of a non-fiction piece by Alice Walker that we may read next year; it entails a young girl’s changing self-image. In this chapter, write about the misconceptions people have about you. Focus on how you feel about these misconceptions.

Chapter 4: “We Know the Truth by Heart”

We all have our favorite TV shows, rock bands, books, subjects, teachers, and relatives. In this essay, pick your favorite quote and apply it to your life citing real examples.

Chapter 5: “The Only Certain Reality is Change”

Reflect upon the changes you have experienced so far in your high school career. Write about the changes that have occurred and their significance and impact on you thus far.
